After travelling North-America and leaving to South-America, here some of our Travel facts & figures:
Sleeping:
Since we left Bayreuth we spent 79 nights in foreign beds.
40 of those we stayed in hotels (this was the nicest one in Miami!):
37 nights we camped:
and 2 nights we stayed with friends.
Way of Travel:
The last three months we took the plane only twice: from Frankfurt to Vancouver and from Los Angeles to Miami. In Canada and Alaska we drove around 12800 km and in the USA about 4000 km with our rentals. For the short trip from Vancouver to Seattle we took an Amtrak bus (response to our complaint still outstanding…).
US States Traveled:
We crossed the following 9 US states:
We really liked the colorful licence plates from the different states. Or did you know, that Idaho is famous for its potatoes?
Lost & Found:
Since we are traveling with already quite full backpacks we strongly restricted ourselves with shopping 🙁
During our time in North-America we only bought few small things, e.g. a T-shirt, a pair of shorts, a pair of swim shorts (replacement for the torn ones) and two beanie hats. And not to forget the gold, we panned in Alaska!
Sadly Martina already lost her new beanie 🙁 We also forgot our two waterproof iPhone cases in the Canadian rental car (it just had too many compartments…). Also we are missing one of our titanium spoons! But I guess that’s a good average of loosing things during several months of travel.
Food:
We were eating such a variety of food in the last three months and we already shared much of it with you.
Some of it was very healthy:
Some was more junky:
Some was very sweet:
Most of it was really great, but some was just to satisfy hunger:
Now we are really looking forward to traveling South-America. It’s the first time for both of us (except Andys various early childhood Brazil experiences) and our Spanish is very basic!

I can help with that!!! Happy to be your personal spanish translator!!! 😉
Enjoy South America!!! I have a few Friends in Peru, Brazil and Chile… in case you need!!!
Besos!!
Thanks! We might get back to your offer. So far we are doing ok and our little Spanish-English dictionary is worth it’s weight in gold 🙂
By now we understand some of the reply phrases and commonly used expressions. And if all fails communication using hands and feet has always worked so far 🙂
Great photos as usual. Where are you know? Aunt Judie is in New York on her way to Italy. I leave Wednesday for Italy. a wek sailing out of Napoli and a few days celebrating Judie’s birthday in Castel
‘Arquato, north of Parma.
Markus and me were talking about your trip just a few hours ago .. and we were wondering about how much money you calculated (or spent already) for food, accommodation and travel (excl. flights) per day?
I said to Markus “Andrew will do the accounting very carefully” 😉 and our guess was sth. between €50 – €100?
That is a very difficult question because it heavily depends on the country you are traveling and of course your standards of accommodation. For example here in Peru 2 people can easily find a hostel for as little as 20 Dollars. We have also slept in a mountain village hostel for only 3 USD/night. The closer you want to live to the “Western” standard, the more you will pay. In all big cities they do have luxury hotels you can spend approx. the same money as at home 🙂
Compared to north America life is cheap here. Typical motel rates there were more like 80-120$ per night and camp sites anywhere between 12-30$.
In South America food is not only delicious, it is also very inexpensive. You can get an entire lunch with soup, main meal, dessert and a drink for only 2 Dollars (menu del dia). Of course if you choose more fancy restaurants with a la carte food-choice and more fancy food, prices typically range from 10-50 Dollars (2 people).
Entrance fees, guided tours and rental cars have to be considered extra.
The flights are mostly covered by a round the world ticket e.g. the “oneworld Explorer” which include all main flights around the world.
Hope this gives you a basic idea of what to plan for 🙂
